Woven Wire Mesh
Woven wire mesh, also known as wire cloth, is amazingly versatile and easily adapted to almost any application. Our main industrial woven mesh stock material is stainless steel types 304 and 316 in apertures from 50mm to 40 micron in normal weaves to as fine as 15 micron particle retention in Dutch weaves. We stock a range of standard meshes in other materials such as copper, brass, nylon and galvanized mild steel. Heavy duty screens made from stainless steel, galvanized mild steel and high carbon mild steel are generally manufactured to order.
To better understand your requirements, we need as much information as possible.
- Material
- Mesh number being the number of openings per running inch
- Aperture which for woven meshes is the clear opening between the wires
- Wire diameter
- Width and length of the screen or roll
- Number of screens
Measuring Woven Wire Mesh
Mesh count
International standards identify mesh count or mesh number by the number of openings per linear inch. For example 4 mesh indicates that there are four openings in a linear inch.
Apertures are the clear opening between two parallel wires and wire diameter is the thickness of the wire or wires in both directions.
Aperture in mm
Wire diameter in mm
Various weave types are available and which weave is used will depend on the opening and wire diameters.
Some of the most common weave types are shown here
Plain weaves
Plain Weave is the most common weave type used for finer meshes. The wires are not crimped before weaving. The warp wires (which run the length of the roll) and the shute or weft wires (which run the width of the roll) pass over and under each other which locks the mesh in place.
Double crimp weave
The warp and weft wires may be crimped before weaving or the corrugations at the point of intersection may just result from the weave process itself. This keeps the wires in position and ensures tension is better maintained
Intermediate crimp weaves
Intermediate crimp weaves are used in manufacturing coarser or larger meshes so that larger openings made with relatively light wires remain stable. The warp and weft wires are crimped before weaving and the number of crimps will depend on the size of the opening relative to the wire thickness.
Twilled weaves
Twilled weave is used mainly for finer filtration with greater load applications. The warp and shute wires pass over and under two wires in both directions allowing heavier wires to be used than is possible for plain weave meshes.
Dutch Weaves (or Hollander weaves)
Plain Dutch Weave
In Plain Dutch Weave the warp wires are greater in diameter than the shute wires and remain straight while the shute wires are woven in the same way as plain weave wire cloth. This creates a high density wire cloth with a wedge shaped opening.
Dutch Weaves (or Hollander weaves)
Twilled Dutch Weave
Twilled Dutch Weave combines the features of Plain Dutch Weave and Twilled Weave. Each shute wire passes over two and under two forming a fine mesh in one direction and coarse mesh in the other direction. This type of weave is capable of supporting greater loads than Plain Dutch Weave with finer openings than Twilled Weave
